artistic statement

The largest motivating factor in my artistry is the current representation of black women in media. How we are viewed in film, theater, television has created deep, systemic, psychological injuries. I believe our generation has an obligation to investigate and address these injuries.

Women are experiencing a form of trauma from generations of oppression. I am currently most interested in investigating the psyche around the effects of the epigenetics, how our experiences become imprinted into our genetic sequencing and then passed down, and how cultural landscapes can ignite them. I strive to create bold work centered around social justice themes.

Iā€™m also passionate about working in New York City public schools because theater has the power to heal, to incite, to give voice to the next generation. Theater training prepares kids for the future by teaching them creative problem solving, being a leader, being an ensemble member, confident communication, value in their ideas, and the power to speak on voice IN their voice. It engages mind, body, heart, and spirit. These skills are translatable to any industry, to any occupation.
